Strengthening contact tracing in Tasmania

The Tasmanian Government’s priority throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has been the health and safety of all Tasmanians.

With more people moving around our beautiful State it is important that we are able to swiftly and accurately contact trace in the event of a potential Covid-19 case or outbreak.

This is why we are working to strengthen our contact tracing efforts and deliver a free contact tracing app for venues to be able to use if they wish to move from paper based systems. Importantly it is not intended to replace current electronic collection methods.

The “Check in TAS” App is now in the final stages of development and will be available in Apple or Google app stores from 1 December 2020, with venue registration applications for a Check in TAS QR code opening today.

From 1 December, members of the public will be able to download the App to a smart phone and register their details – name, email and mobile number. Then every time they see a Check in TAS QR Code at a venue, they can open their Check in TAS App, detect the QR code and the App will display a green tick to show they have checked into the venue.

The App will also allow an individual to check a group into a venue, and users can also see their own check in history in the App.

Importantly, there will be stringent data and security protocols, and data history will be deleted after 28 days. Personal data will only be collected for COVID-19 tracing purposes, and can only be accessed by authorised Tasmanian Health personnel in the event of a positive COVID-19 case at the venue. Venues will not have access to the contact tracing data collected via the Check in TAS App.

From today, venues can choose to register to receive a free Check in TAS QR Code, by completing a form online at: www.health.tas.gov.au/covid19/check_in_tas or calling the Public Health hotline on 1800 671 738.

More information about the App will be provided at the launch on 1 December 2020.

We thank our development partners, ACT Department of Health for their generous support and assistance in providing their successful Check in ACT App for re-use in Tasmania.
