Seventh Supreme Court Judge sought

An extensive, nation-wide search is underway to appoint a new full-time Supreme Court Judge as part of our Government’s plan for a more effective and efficient justice system.

Expressions of interest are being sought from Australian lawyers who wish to be considered for appointment as the Supreme Court of Tasmania’s seventh Judge.

The appointment will complement the recent re-appointment of the three Acting Judges to the Supreme Court for a further two years, providing better access to justice and assisting in reducing Criminal Court backlogs.

Candidates will need to be Australian lawyers of no less than 10 years standing, or have been a magistrate, or a judge of the Federal or Family Court of Australia, the Supreme Court of another state or territory, or the Supreme or High Court of New Zealand.

The Tasmanian Government has committed $1.1 million per annum for the seventh Judge, who will commence from 1 July 2021 following their successful appointment.

The expressions of interest period will close on 8 March 2021.
