Increasing female participation in action sports

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is pleased to release the Girls in Action Sports Project report in an effort to provide a better understanding of the barriers and enablers for girls to participate in three action sports – mountain biking, surfing and skateboarding.

Our Government contributed $38,858 towards this research, which was undertaken in partnership with Womensport and Recreation Tasmania.

The report provides new insights into the barriers faced by girls in participating in three action sports, and importantly, the factors and supports which enable and encourage them to get involved.

The report’s recommendations are relevant to a wide range of sport and recreation organisations and providers.

The Tasmanian Government is working to further increase opportunities for women and girls to participate in all levels of sport and is developing a new strategy to achieve this.

We have already taken steps to increase women and girls' participation in sport through the Levelling the Playing Field Grants Program which aimed to remove one of the barriers to female participation – inadequate facilities.

We have also provided $15 million over two years, for the Improving the Playing Field Grants Program which aims to upgrade amenities at sporting facilities around Tasmania to cater for all participants.

We are also supporting the Women in Sport Coaching Scholarship, in a partnership between Womensport and Recreation Tasmania and the Tasmanian Institute of Sport to provide women with coach learning and development opportunities.
