Resilience of Tasmanian older persons recognised

International Day of Older Persons is an important opportunity to highlight the contributions that older people make to our society, and raise awareness about ageing in today's world.

The theme for International Day of Older Persons 2022 is “Resilience of Older Persons in a Changing World.”

The Tasmanian Government is committed to building an age-friendly State in which all Tasmanians, regardless of age, are supported to be active, healthy, and connected in our community.

That’s why we, as a Government support a Tasmanian Active Ageing Strategy, with a new 2023-2029 Strategy currently being developed after state-wide consultations were conducted this year.

Every recognition must go to Council on the Ageing Tasmania (COTA Tas), who act so dilligently as the peak body representing the interests of older people across the State, and to the thousands of older volunteers who do so much to enrich communities right across the State.

Across Australia, 1 October is also Probus Day and we celebrate the great work that Probus Clubs do in Tasmania to maintain social connections and build resilience among older persons.

The Probus philosophy is “Fun, Friendship and Fellowship’, and clubs encourage social connection, new hobbies and learning new skills for older community members.

In response to growing cost of living pressures, the Government has prioritised older Tasmanians for direct support via a $305 million package of discounts and concessions.

On International Day of Older Persons, the Tasmanian Government acknowledges the huge contribution of older Tasmanians to all aspects of Tasmanian life.
