The Rockliff Liberal Government is committed to delivering more housing and homelessness services for Tasmanian women in need.
"Addressing homelessness is a key focus of my Government,’’ Premier Rockliff said.
"Our Government recognises that women are disproportionately affected by homelessness and that’s why we are taking action to provide for our most vulnerable.
"It was extremely pleasing to inspect progress on the Salvation Army’s 21-unit development in Moonah today."
Minister Barnett said these one and two bedroom homes will provide much needed accommodation for women on the Housing Register, aged over 55 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
"This is a great example of Homes Tasmania partnering with The Salvation Army and Select Foundation to deliver social housing for Tasmanians," Minister Barnett said
"The 2021 ABS Census data shows hardship is widespread across Australia and we must do better to support our vulnerable. With Tasmania’s population growth exceeding predictions, we are delivering on our ambitious plan to build more houses sooner."
The Salvation Army currently manages a range of housing and homelessness services for Tasmanians in need.
It is also expanding its McCombe House women’s shelter by constructing a further six units with funding from Homes Tasmania.
Homes Tasmania funds eight crisis and transitional accommodation services for women and girls, and 13 additional crisis and transitional accommodation services that are available for both men and women.
"We are increasing our supply of homelessness accommodation around the State so that Tasmanians experiencing, or at risk of experiencing homelessness, have safe accommodation options,’’ Minister Barnett said.
"This is all part of our ambitious plan to deliver 10,000 new social and affordable homes by 2032, helping to put roofs over the heads of our most vulnerable and we are currently on track to build 1,500 dwellings by June 30 with 800 completed by the end of February."
Women in Tasmania can access a range of additional housing options, including brokered emergency accommodation, social housing, supported accommodation, homelessness accommodation and Family Violence Rapid Rehousing.
