Another step towards a Tasmanian AFL team

A Tasmanian AFL team is another step closer following Colin Carter’s visit to Tasmania this week, as part of his work to assess the Tasmanian AFL Licence Taskforce report.

Mr Carter has now seen first-hand what our State can offer the AFL should we have our own AFL team, and I thank him for the openness he has brought to all his meetings with the taskforce and stakeholders in recent days.

Mr Carter is an experienced football person, having previously served on both the AFL Commission and around 10 years as President of the Geelong Football Club, up until last year.

It remains my opinion that he will provide a fair and balanced assessment of our business case, and I am confident he now has a full understanding of the benefits Tasmania would bring by having our own AFL team.

There is no doubt that the inclusion of a Tasmanian team will not only stack up financially and provide our young men and women with a pathway to play football at the highest level, but will also complete the AFL by making it a truly national competition.

We can now look to Mr Carter’s work being completed in coming months, which will provide important clarity to enable us to make arrangements with Hawthorn and North Melbourne, and importantly take the next steps towards our own Tasmanian team.
