Next step for NWRH redevelopment

Planning has begun on the next stage of the redevelopment of the North West Regional Hospital in line with our First 100 Day Plan.

The redevelopment includes the construction of a purpose-built mental health facility which will enable the provision of safe and therapeutic, recovery-oriented care, and importantly, it will be appropriate for all ages.

This is part of the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s $60 million for the NWRH redevelopment, with the new mental health precinct to replace the ageing Spencer Clinic and due to be completed in 2025.

This includes $40 million for the first stage of the new mental health precinct and $20 million to provide ward upgrades, with space freed up from the Spencer Clinic, which will provide additional bed capacity at the hospital.

The facility will be co-designed with consumers, carers, staff and key stakeholders with the first phase of planning being detailed clinical service planning and model of care development.

Site investigations will also be undertaken in this important planning phase, to identify the appropriate location of the new facility, taking into consideration whole-of-site capacity, constraints and critical services and infrastructure.

Work is also already underway on the updated masterplan for the NWRH, which was also a commitment in our plan for our first 100 days, as well as the Mersey Community Hospital and local health facilities, starting with clinical service planning, infrastructure assessments and site investigations.

The masterplan will provide a roadmap for staged redevelopments of the hospitals and local facilities to meet the long-term service and infrastructure needs of the North-West community.

The development of the masterplan will include consultation with community members, staff and key stakeholder organisations, who will be invited to participate throughout the planning process.
