A significant milestone has been reached with Community Corrections’ Electronic Monitoring and Compliance Unit now successfully monitoring over 100 home detention offenders simultaneously, as part of our commitment to keep Tasmanians safe.
Electronic monitoring helps keep victims and the community safe by ensuring offenders’ movements are tracked and stay within the parameters of any court-ordered conditions.
It is an alternative sentencing option to imprisonment which provides greater opportunities for an offender to rehabilitate by allowing them to remain in employment and close to family, whilst providing community safety.
The Monitoring and Compliance Unit was established in 2019 and delivers continuous monitoring services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
In addition to delivering electronic monitoring services for home detention orders, it also monitors people on parole when it is a condition of their parole order, some family violence offenders, and family violence victim-survivors who consent to participate in the program by carrying a small monitoring device.
Demand for electronic monitoring continues to increase as an alternative sentencing option and I am pleased to have delivered these varied sentencing options.
