Works underway on Royal Hobart Hospital Pharmacy Redevelopment Project

The Rockliff Liberal Government is delivering on its long-term plan to ensure patients in need of life-saving pharmaceuticals receive them in the right place, at the right time, with the commencement of a $22 million pharmacy redevelopment at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Site clearing and enabling works are now underway to deliver the Rockliff Liberal Government’s RHH Pharmacy Redevelopment Project which will deliver a state-of-the-art hospital pharmacy, including sterile pharmaceutical production facilities, to meet state-wide demands.

Minister for Health, Guy Barnett, has announced Hutchinson Builders will deliver the project which is part of the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s long-term plan to ensure Tasmanians get the health care system they deserve.

“The Royal Hobart Hospital Pharmacy plays a critical role in delivering health cares to inpatients and outpatients and supporting local and statewide pharmacy services," said Minister Barnett.

“This pharmacy redevelopment will mean that our hardworking health staff can provide better care, right throughout the hospital, particularly for patients undergoing cancer treatment and patients receiving adult and neonatal intensive care.

“We are also continuing with our innovative approach to health care by building new dispensing facilities and clinical support areas, which means the RHH will be able to manufacture products right here in Tasmania.”

The project will deliver purpose-built dispensary and sterile production suites and will also house Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) accredited manufacturing facilities for jack jumper immunotherapy products for people with jack jumper ant venom allergies.

The expanded pharmacy will be constructed on the site of the existing statewide pharmacy and expand into the former Central Sterilising area as part of continued Redevelopment of the RHH campus.

The RHH Pharmacy Redevelopment Project is expected to be completed in mid-2025.

Minister Barnett said the Government is doing what matters for all Tasmanians by delivering world-class facilities right across the State, and the pharmacy redevelopment is just one more project getting underway that is building a better health system, now and into the future.
