The salmon industry continues to deliver for Tasmania

The Tasmanian Liberal Government proudly supports Tasmania’s sustainable salmon industry as one of the State’s great success stories which is globally recognised for its innovation and commitment to world-leading science.

Independent EMRS polling released today, commissioned by the Tasmanian Salmon Growers Association, shows growing support for the importance of the Tasmanian salmon industry.

This support is off the back of continuous improvements in industry practices, and strengthening of the Government’s regulatory framework.

It was pleasing to see that respondents recognised the importance of the industry to Tasmania, which provides thousands of direct and indirect jobs throughout the State, many in regional communities.

As we saw in this year’s Agri-Food Score Card, the salmon industry remained the highest value food product delivering more than $1.15 billion in direct value to the Tasmanian economy.

In 2022 the Tasmanian Government will be getting on with the job of consulting industry and the community about a new 10-year Tasmanian Salmon Future Directions Plan, which will focus on targeting value growth, continuous improvement in regulation, compliance and industry performance, and ensuring value is shared with the Tasmanian community.

The Government is further strengthening environmental regulation through independent oversight by the EPA, improving transparency through the salmon portal, strengthening biosecurity, improving safety and management of wildlife interactions, and cleaning up our waterways through a zero tolerance policy on marine debris.

As we head into Christmas, we thank the thousands of workers and businesses right across the salmon industry supply chain, and we encourage everyone to enjoy world-class salmon this Festive Season.
