A new report released today shows the racing industry contributes $185 million per annum to the Tasmanian economy, with 38 per cent of that directly benefiting our regional communities which is absolutely fantastic for our State.
As the Minister for Racing, I believe it is important that we meet the growing needs of today’s participants, as well as the next generation of racing participants.
The Tasracing report also identified that nearly 6,000 people participate in the industry, including breeders, owners, trainers, racing club staff, jockeys and drivers.
The Tasmanian Liberal Government is continuing to back Tasmania’s racing industry.
Increased stakesmoney are the single most important driver for participation in Tasmania’s racing industry.
Stakesmoney is the driver for investment in the industry which creates job-creation and economic activity, particularly in regional Tasmania.
We are delivering an increase in stakes across all three racing codes of 16 per cent over four years including six per cent in 2021-22.
A healthy racing industry requires a strong and vibrant breeding industry. The Government has supported the State’s thoroughbred and harness breeding industry with a contribution over seven years of $2.45 million ($350k per year).
This report also outlines that $12.4 million is spent by Tasmanian breeders on the breeding of racehorses.
We will continue to deliver on other racing commitments such as improved training for apprentice jockeys and other racing industry career opportunities to ensure continued support for this important industry.
