Swearing in of Associate Justice Daly

A ceremonial sitting of the Supreme Court in Hobart was held today to mark the swearing in of recently appointed Associate Justice Michael Daly.

Associate Justice Daly’s appointment to this role follows a long period of service to the Magistrates Court, having been appointed as a Magistrate in 2007 and as Deputy Chief Magistrate in 2011.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Guy Barnett, has commended this worthy appointment.

“Associate Justice Daly has always taken on leadership roles within the legal profession and has been at the cutting edge of new developments in the law,” Attorney-General Barnett said.

“His commitment to improvements was key in developing the Youth Justice Division in the Magistrates Court.

“He led the development of specialist expertise, better co-ordination of relevant services, and increasing collaboration between government and non-government agencies.

“I congratulate Associate Justice Daly on his swearing in and wish him well in his new role.”

Associate Justice Daly replaces Mr Stephen Holt in the role of Associate Judge. Mr Holt resigned in September 2023 after having held the position for 24 years.

Following amendment to section 372 of the Criminal Code 1924, which came into effect on 7 November 2023 Associate Justice Daly will be the first Associate Judge of the Supreme Court to exercise both criminal and civil jurisdiction. In doing so he will assist in the case management of a broad range of matters and contribute to the efficiency of the criminal jurisdiction of the Supreme Court.
