Supporting young Tasmanian athletes to compete on the national stage

Young Tasmanian athletes selected to compete at interstate sporting events will be financially supported by a new Government program.

The Rockliff Liberal Government wants young Tasmanian athletes to dream big and is putting the supports in place to allow them to follow those dreams.

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Nic Street, said every young Tasmanian with an ambition to represent their state in their chosen sport should have the opportunity to do so.

“I receive requests on a weekly basis for financial assistance from young Tasmanian athletes who have been selected in a representative side and are facing hefty costs to travel interstate and compete at a national championship or event,” he said.

“I am very pleased to announce a new program – The Junior Travel Assistance Fund – that will help to ease the financial burden for Tasmanian families.”

The Fund will be available for young Tasmanian athletes aged from 12 – 18 who have made a Tasmanian representative side and are required to travel interstate to compete at an eligible national sporting championship or event.

“Sending a young athlete to these events can costs families thousands of dollars, and we want to help alleviate some of those costs by providing a one-off grant of $250,” Minister Street said.

“Sport can have many positive impacts on a young person’s life including improving resilience, enhancing social development, and encouraging social connectedness.

“We want more Tasmanians to get active, no matter where they live, what their age or their circumstances, and we are investing significantly into the State’s sport and recreation sector to make this possible.”

More information on the Junior Travel Assistance Fund, including the program guidelines and eligibility, will be made available in the coming weeks, with applications expected to open in May.
