Vulnerable Tasmanians will have greater access to nourishing food, drinks and support with the launch of another Loui’s Van.
During the 2021 State Election, the Tasmanian Government committed more than $165,000 to the St Vincent de Paul Society of Tasmania to buy three new Toyota Hilux flat tray dual-cab vehicles to expand their Vinnie’s Vans and Loui’s Vans in the North, North-West and South.
Minister for Community Services and Development, Nic Street, launched the new Loui’s Van for the South today and reiterated the Government’s commitment to deliver on food security.
“Every Tasmanian has the right to access sufficient, safe, nutritious, quality food and the Rockliff Liberal Government is committed to delivering sustainable food relief and building food resilience across the State,” he said.
“Vinnie’s Vans and Loui’s Vans support thousands of Tasmanians every year, providing freshly-made, nourishing meals, and countless cups of home-made hot soup, hot beverages, and cold drinks.
“The important work of Vinnie’s through Vinnie’s Vans and Loui’s Vans runs right across Tasmania in the greater Launceston, Burnie, Wynyard, Smithton and Hobart areas and the Government is proud to support them as part of our vision of a safe and caring community.”
The more than $165,000 commitment was on top of the Tasmanian Government’s 2021 election commitment to an increase in base funding for all three State-funded food vans from $40,000 per year to $60,000 per year until 2024.
“The Tasmanian Government support of these initiatives is one part of our vision to move from food relief to food resilience in Tasmania and this journey will be detailed in our Action Plan, which will be released shortly,” Minister Street said.
