The future of Tasmania’s much-loved Dark Mofo festival has been cemented with a new three year agreement providing $7.5 million to the festival as part of the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s $21.5 million fund to secure Tasmania’s iconic events.
Dark Mofo has been a cultural beacon in Tasmania since its inception in 2013, bringing locals out of hibernation and attracting visitors to the State in the traditionally quiet winter months.
The festival has demonstrated year on year growth, providing a significant injection for not only Tasmania’s tourism and hospitality industries but also for local service providers for contracts relating to production, construction and labour hire.
In 2019, the festival recoded over 19,000 visitors, which based on people visiting Tasmania for an average of 5.3 nights, and with each visitor spending an average of $200 per night, means the return to the visitor economy was over $20 million.
The Tasmanian Government invests in events and festivals because they are an important part of our way of life, and our visitor economy which support local businesses and jobs.
In addition to the $7.5 million three year agreement, Dark Mofo will continue to receive dedicated marketing support from Tourism Tasmania, for each event for the period of the funding agreement.
