New $3.6 million Special Capabilities Building to support Tasmania Police

The Rockliff Liberal Government is committed to supporting Tasmania Police and protecting our community and welcomes today’s official opening of the new Specialist Capabilities Building in Southern Tasmania.

This $3.6 million project has been funded by the Tasmanian Government in addition to the $1.4 million already invested in our Special Operations Group to ensure the safety of Tasmanians.

``Special Operations Group members are highly trained, specialist tactical officers, who are equipped to respond to a wide range of security situations,’’ Minister Ellis said.

“Members can be deployed during high-risk policing incidents, in response to security threats or to support criminal investigations, including incidents such as sieges, hostage situations or instances of high-risk arrests.

``This impressive building encompasses a range of specialist police amenities with dedicated incident response spaces, which will benefit our specialist tactical officers, and importantly the community safety more broadly.

``In addition to this facility, we were also able to open a $1 million Northern Specialist  Capabilities Building in 2021.

``To ensure the Special Operations Group has the tools they need, we have also provided $400,000 over recent years for new state-of-the-art equipment to keep Tasmanians safe,’’ Minister Ellis said.

The Tasmanian Government is also investing $8.9 million to employ more officers to the Special Operations Group within Tasmania Police and this will be completed by mid-2024.
