More beds - better outcomes for Tasmanian cardiology patients

As part of our election commitment to deliver an additional 298 beds statewide by June 30, 2024, the Rockliff Liberal Government has been opening new beds across all major hospitals as it expands the capacity within the health system to meet growing demand.

Minister for Health, Guy Barnett, today opened two more beds in the Launceston General Hospital’s Northern Coronary Care Unit, increasing the capacity by 33 per cent and taking the Unit from six to eight beds.

“The increase in beds will assist with the management and flow of cardiology patients across the Northern region,’’ Minister Barnett said.

“Two additional beds became operational earlier this month, increasing the capacity of the unit to care for cardiology patients across the North.

“It was a privilege to visit the Northern Coronary Care Unit and meet the staff that do such a great job in supporting the health and wellbeing of cardiology patients in Northern Tasmania. I thank them for their very important work.

“The opening of the additional beds is also expected to relieve pressure on the LGH Emergency Department and increase ambulance efficiency.”

As of June last year, the Rockliff Liberal Government had opened approximately 240 new beds across the State, making significant progress in delivering on its commitment to boost bed capacity in our hospitals and ensure Tasmanians can access the right healthcare, in the right place, at the right time

With a final tranche of 68 beds to be opened by 30 June 2024, the Government is on track to deliver on its commitment.
