Long-term housing plan easing pressure on Tasmanians

The Rockliff Liberal Government is delivering on its long-term plan to increase housing supply and relieve rental pressures for Tasmanians.

The PropTrack Rental Report, released yesterday, showed that Tasmania was leading the nation in relieving pressures for renters.

Tasmania led the nation in yearly change in rental listings, with Hobart seeing a 24.5 per cent increase in listings over the past year and regional Tasmania seeing a 14.9 per cent increase. These increases far outstripped those across the country.

Hobart was the only capital city to see a decrease in annual median weekly advertised rents, down 4.8 per cent, with all other cities seeing significant increases.

Minister for Housing and Construction, Nic Street, welcomed the data and said this was proof that our nation-leading housing plan was working.

“We know that increasing land and housing supply is the best way to ease housing and rental pressures, which is why we are funding the most ambitious affordable housing plan in Tasmanian history,’’ Minister Street said.

“While these figures are pleasing, we know that increased supply is the answer and will continue working to relieve the pressures on the Tasmanian rental market.

``Our nation-leading plan will deliver 10,000 more social and affordable homes by 2032 to meet the diverse housing needs of Tasmanians, including youth, the elderly, those living with a disability, men, women and families.

“All supply helps right across the housing market, and the latest data shows that our long-term plan is working for everyday renters.

“It is clear that only the Rockliff Liberal Government has a long-term plan to deliver what matters for all Tasmanians – and that plan is working.”
