Have your say on Retail Leases Bill

Public consultation has now begun on the Retail Leases Bill 2022 that will streamline and modernise Tasmania’s legislation around retail leases.

This is the first major update of retail leasing regulation in Tasmania since 1998, and sets out processes relating to retail leases, rights of tenants, and complaint and dispute resolution processes.

The draft Bill is the result of a comprehensive review of Tasmania’s retail lease legislation, which commenced with a previous round of consultation in 2019.

Submissions to the consultation draft Retail Leases Bill 2022 review are invited from anyone with an interest in retail leases matters, including tenants leasing retail space, those in shopping centres, landlords/lessors, building owners and managers, and professionals who give advice about retail leases.

Since the initial consultation period, Tasmania has experienced the impacts of, and is now living with, COVID-19.

The consultation draft Retail Leases Bill 2022 has been updated accordingly and is now available at www.justice.tas.gov.au/haveyoursay. I encourage all interested parties to go online and have their say.
