Delivering on innovative youth housing

More young people at risk of homelessness will have access to supported accommodation and help to build skills as independent young adults with a new service advertised today.

A Request for Grant Proposal (RFGP) to manage the new Youth2Independence Homes program is now open to suitably experienced non-government organisations.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government Plan provides $5 million to this new youth housing initiative, to commence by the middle of next year.

Youth2Independence Homes will turn young lives around by providing small, home-like environments for young people at risk of homelessness, exiting shelters, statutory care, or youth detention.

The successful provider will deliver transitional accommodation to four clusters of six modular units including accommodation for an onsite manger and ten share-homes, both with support provided to help young residents to engage in education and training and to make positive choices so they transition to independent young adults.

As a Liberal Government, the model we have designed has a particular emphasis on linking housing to  education and training. We know that for young people to become truly independent and contributing members of society, they need the knowledge and workplace skills that will lead to employment or even their own business.

We are taking serious action on homelessness with a record investment of $615 million into social and affordable housing, and homelessness initiatives; including responding to identified demand for youth accommodation.

Cluster homes will be located in the Burnie, Devonport, Launceston and Clarence municipalities with share-homes located nearby.

Youth2Independence homes will support around 50 young people every two years and will commence by 30 June 2022.
