Child Health and Parenting Service to resume

I’m pleased to confirm that Child Health assessments will begin resuming full-service delivery from today, Monday 7 February 2022, as previously advised.

Given the importance of the children’s vaccination program, staff working in Child Health and Parenting Service (CHaPS) were temporarily reassigned to assist in this rollout.

With staff now returning, Child Health assessments and other appointments will return to full capacity across the State over the coming months.

The initial focus will be to increase appointments available for families with children due for their six-month Child Health Assessment. Following the return to full service, appointments for twelve-month and two-year assessments will become available and updated communications will be shared.

Of course, any parent with immediate concerns can still go to their GP for appointments or contact:

  • The Tasmanian Parent Line (supported by Health Direct Australia) on 1300 808 178 for 24-hour information and support; or
  • The Pregnancy, Birth and Baby line between 7am and 12am on 1800 882 436 for general advice from a midwife/maternal child health nurse.

The resumption of the CHaPS comes after all four of our public hospitals were de-escalated to pandemic response level 2, with outpatient activities recommencing in a staged approach.

Tasmania’s incredibly high vaccination rates have significantly impacted the level of hospitalisations we have experienced and have allowed us to continue the provision of critical health services, including category 1 elective surgery during this period.

The Tasmanian Government will continue to prioritise the health and safety of all Tasmanians and it’s important that we continue to remain flexible to be able to respond to changing circumstances.

I thank parents for their understanding and patience as CHaPS returns to full-service delivery over the coming months.
