The Tasmanian Government extends its sincere condolences to the family, friends and former colleagues of George Arthur Shaw, who passed away at age 94.
The passing of the Honourable George Shaw marks the loss of a distinguished Tasmanian parliamentarian whose service to the Legislative Council was characterised by integrity, independence of mind and an unwavering commitment to the people of Tasmania.
Representing the electorate of Macquarie from 1968 to 1998, and later serving as President of the Legislative Council, he earned the respect of colleagues through his fairness, wisdom and dedication to public life.
For three decades he served his community with quiet determination, humility and sound judgement, never seeking the spotlight but making a profound contribution to Tasmania and its Parliament.
Through his leadership and stewardship of the Legislative Council, Mr Shaw helped uphold the integrity, independence and traditions of this institution.
Mr Shaw’s commitment to democratic principles, measured leadership and devotion to those he represented leave a lasting legacy and an enduring example of public service at its best.
Mr Shaw's contribution to Tasmania's parliamentary history will be remembered with gratitude, respect and admiration.
There will be a public celebration of Mr Shaw’s life at the Longford Bowls Club on Friday 25th September from 1pm to 3pm.
