The roadmap for Northern Tasmania’s next decade has been released, focusing on unlocking investment, creating jobs, strengthening industries and ensuring the region remains a destination where people choose to live, work, visit and invest.
In July, the Tasmanian Government brought together more than 100 leaders from business, industry, local government, education and community organisations for the Northern Tasmania Economic Summit.
What emerged was a shared ambition for Northern Tasmania to be more confident, more innovative and more determined in pursuing growth and investment.
Premier Rockliff unveiled the Government’s Northern Economic Plan on Sunday.
“Northern Tasmania has been a driving force behind the State’s economic success for decades,” Premier Rockliff said.
“The release of the Plan marks the next era of opportunity in the North.”
The region is home to globally recognised agriculture and food production, advanced manufacturing, strategic industrial precincts, world-class education and research institutions, growing tourism experiences and some of Australia’s most affordable and reliable renewable energy.
“We are already building an even better Tasmania through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future and our Economic Statement, and this roadmap will ensure the Northern region thrives for generations to come,” Premier Rockliff said.
The Plan builds on the significant investment already underway across Northern Tasmania, including major upgrades to UTAS Stadium and the Silverdome; support for a new convention and events facility; major road upgrades; redeveloping the Launceston General Hospital; and a new Launceston Heart Centre.
Premier Rockliff said the best ideas come from those who know the region best, and the ideas and aspirations from those who attended the summit have shaped the Government’s Northern Tasmania Economic Plan.
The Northern Economic Plan outlines three priority areas: Unlocking opportunity; An Island of innovation; and A destination of choice.
“It provides a pathway for Northern Tasmania to become Australia’s leading regional destination," Premier Rockliff said.
“Our Government makes the commitment to partner with key regional partners to progress the Plan’s priority actions, unlock investment opportunities and respond to emerging economic opportunities over the coming decade.”
