The Tasmanian Government will commence an Expression of Interest (EOI) process to support the development of a landmark Wellness Precinct on Crown land in Northern Tasmania.

A major research study undertaken by Tourism Tasmania shows the State is a sought-after destination for wellness travel with strong potential to grow this market.

Wellness at home is routine and individual, but when people imagine a trip to Tasmania, wellness becomes more experiential, shared and driven by nature and atmosphere, the report found.

The EOI will seek innovative proposals from the private sector to deliver a nationally significant tourism and investment opportunity.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff said Northern Tasmania already possesses many of the qualities increasingly sought by wellness visitors from across Australia and around the world.

"Visitors are looking for opportunities to disconnect, recharge and reconnect with nature," Premier Rockliff said.

"Northern Tasmania has what many destinations can only dream of. Clean air, pristine water, stunning landscapes, world-class food and wine, and a lifestyle that is the envy of the nation.

"We will work with industry on proposals that can be delivered on Crown land in Northern Tasmania, strengthening the region’s position as Australia's premier wellness destination.

"The Wellness Precinct is a key initiative under our Northern Economic Plan and reflects the shared ambition to create new opportunities for investment, jobs and year-round visitation."

The proposed Wellness Precinct would build on the region's natural advantages and growing visitor economy, creating a destination centred on restoration, wellbeing and nature immersion.

The EOI process will invite proposals from developers, investors and operators with the vision and capability to deliver a world-class wellness destination in Northern Tasmania.

Potential proposals may include:

  • Thermal bathing and spa experiences
  • Hot and cold immersion pools
  • Luxury wellness accommodation
  • Health and wellbeing retreats
  • Nature immersion and walking experiences
  • Wellness, longevity and preventative health programs

The Tasmanian Government’s Northern Economic Plan was released on Sunday, following the Northern Economic Summit held in July.

Premier Rockliff said the wellness initiative demonstrated the type of opportunities the Northern Economic Plan was designed to unlock.

"Our Northern Economic Plan is about identifying the projects and industries that can shape the region's future economy,” Premier Rockliff said.

"A Wellness Precinct has the potential to attract private investment, support local businesses, create jobs and further strengthen Northern Tasmania's reputation as a premium place to visit, live and invest."

The Government will provide planning support to the successful project.

Tourism Industry Council Tasmania chief executive, Amy Hills, said: "As we move into the next chapter of Northern Tasmania's economic future, the visitor economy will play an even more critical role than it does now in supporting the region.

"We have the potential to bring together the region's strengths in wine, agri-tourism, gastronomy, golf and mountain-biking and connect them with the emerging trend of wellness to cement the north on the bucket-lists of travellers.

"The potential for northern Tasmania's visitor economy is immense, supported by increased self drive visitors coming off our new Spirits and driven by an increased and carefully targeted business events market supported by the right infrastructure.

"Northern Tasmania can build a future powered by the visitor economy, benefitting both residents and visitors alike, because everything we invest in to improve our visitor economy, also benefits Tasmanians."

Tourism Tasmania chief executive, Sarah Kingston-Clark, said we are already seeing a rising trend in demand for Tasmania’s growing wellness experiences across the state, and Tourism Tasmania’s research on wellness opportunities in 2026 found nature led wellness is the strongest trend connecting to Tasmania.

“This EOI presents an exciting opportunity for tourism and job creation in northern Tasmania, based on current trends and research, and Tasmania is well placed to drive visitation through wellness experiences based on our natural assets, food from the source, and a slower pace of travel,” Ms Kingston-Clark said.

“This EOI isn't about importing a wellness industry, it's about backing what local operators, growers and guides here already know how to do, and building a precinct around wellness travel the Tasmanian way."

The EOI will open in October and run for three months.
