TasWater must reconsider price increases

TasWater's sustained price increases are having a growing impact on community groups, sporting clubs, on construction and businesses across the State.

The Tasmanian Government is calling on TasWater and councils to agree to pausing these increases.

We want to work with TasWater and Tasmania's 29 councils to determine a more sustainable way forward.

The importance of working together to find solutions is something I have raised directly with TasWater and the Local Government Association of Tasmania.

We are a 10 per cent shareholder, with local government holding the majority 90 per cent share.

We are seeking support from the majority shareholders so TasWater can determine the best way forward.

We must work with TasWater to ensure that Tasmanians water infrastructure is fit for purpose, however we have heard clearly from sections of the community that these increases are large and that they are hurting.

A sensible and sustainable solution is what is required.
