Tasmanian veteran recognised for group bravery

A former Australian Defence Force leader who served in East Timor has been recognised by the Governor-General as part of the Wattle Day 2026 Australian Bravery Decorations Honours List.

Commander (retired) Ian Parker CSM was awarded a Group Bravery Citation for his service with the United Nations Assistance Mission in East Timor (UNAMET) during the East Timorese independence referendum.

Throughout his deployment in East Timor, Commander Parker was exposed to at least 12 incidents that threatened his life and physical safety.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff said this recognition was bestowed to those who put themselves in harm’s way to protect others.

“Commander Parker is incredibly deserving of this recognition, and I want to thank him for his service and his immense bravery,” Premier Rockliff said.

“On behalf of all Tasmanians, we are very proud to call Commander Parker one of our own.”

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Gavin Pearce, who served in East Timor, said this award was a testament to the bravery of Commander Parker.

“When it comes to serving our country, Tasmanians have always played a significant role,” Minister Pearce said.

“Commander Parker represents the best of us, and I thank him for the courage he displayed to protect our brothers and sisters in East Timor.”

The Australian Bravery Honours List is announced on Wattle Day (1 September) each year. The independent Australian Bravery Decorations Council makes recommendations to the Governor-General regarding who should be recognised and at what level of award.
