Stanley Highway upgrades underway

Planned upgrades to the Stanley Highway are underway, improving safety and efficiency for motorists on the North West highway.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Kerry Vincent, said construction upgrades will be delivered on a 2.8 km stretch of the Stanley Highway between West Inlet Track and Dovecote Road.

“The Stanley Highway upgrades will deliver improvements to one of Tasmania’s most important transport routes, supporting the local community, freight operators, and our tourism and agricultural industries,” Minister Vincent said.

“The upgrade balances road safety improvements with priorities identified by the community, delivering wider lanes and sealed shoulders to improve safety and traffic flow along the route.

“The works will also include upgraded roadside drainage, improvements to key road infrastructure, and the installation of wildlife awareness signage to help protect Tasmania’s iconic wildlife.

“We are building an even better road network, with these upgrades the next phase to be delivered along the Stanley Highway under our Government’s $10 million North West Coast and West Coast Infrastructure Program.

“These upgrades demonstrate the Tasmanian Government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future commitment to improving regional infrastructure and transport connections across the North West.

“They complement projects such as the Trethewies Lookout upgrade, delivered in early 2025 under the same program, which delivered a safer and more welcoming destination.

“Community feedback has played an important role in shaping and prioritising improvements along the highway, and we thank residents and road users for their continued support and patience while these works are delivered.”

Construction is expected to be completed late 2027.
