Royal Hobart Hospital Emergency Department has moved to Argyle Street

The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) Emergency Department (ED) entrance has moved to Argyle Street, near the corner of Liverpool Street, as work progresses on the next stage of the Tasmanian Government’s $130 million ED expansion.

All patients and visitors must now access the ED through the Argyle Street entrance. Public access is no longer available via Liverpool or Campbell Street.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said while these significant upgrades are underway, the Royal Hobart Hospital will remain open and fully operational.

“We are building an even better Tasmania with this project, which is a key part of Stage 2 of the Royal Hobart Hospital Masterplan and will deliver major benefits for patients, families and healthcare workers in southern Tasmania,” Minister Archer said.

“Once complete, the expanded ED will provide 120 treatment points, helping patients receive faster, more efficient treatment and improving patient flow through the hospital.

“This significant expansion will also deliver a more contemporary, fit-for-purpose environment for our dedicated healthcare staff, supporting them to provide the high-quality emergency care Tasmanians deserve.

“Through our Government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we’re delivering an even better health system across our state.”

The Argyle Street relocation will improve access and safety around the hospital, with a dedicated ambulance zone and public drop-off area now in place.

“To accommodate the new arrangements, Argyle Street has now been reduced to two lanes between Collins and Liverpool Streets,” Minister Archer said.

“The right-hand lane is reserved for ambulances, and the adjacent footpath is partially closed to support safe ambulance access."

Clear signage, traffic management and construction zones are in place to guide patients, visitors, motorists and pedestrians safely around the works.

Patients arriving by car are encouraged to follow signs to the Argyle Street ED entrance and use the public drop-off zone located outside the entrance.

Public vehicle access to Hobart Private Hospital will not change.

Anyone requiring emergency care should follow signs to the Argyle Street entrance or call Triple Zero (000) in an emergency.
