Royal Hobart Hospital Emergency Department entrance temporary relocation

The Tasmanian Government is progressing the next stage of the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) Emergency Department (ED) expansion, with a temporary relocation of the ED entrance to Argyle Street from 8am Tuesday 15 September 2026.

From this date, all patients and visitors will access the ED through a new entrance on Argyle Street, near the corner of Liverpool Street.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said the change enables redevelopment of the existing ED and Liverpool Street forecourt as part of the $130 million expansion.

“While the construction is ongoing the RHH will remain fully operational,” Minister Archer said.

“This next stage of the ED expansion will significantly enhance healthcare capacity in southern Tasmania, building on Phase 1 completed in 2023, which delivered 28 additional treatment spaces in the ED.

“Once complete, the upgraded ED will provide 120 treatment points and points of care, supporting faster, more efficient treatment, improved patient flow, and a contemporary working environment for healthcare staff.

“Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future we are committed to ensuring Tasmanians can access the right care, in the right place, at the right time.”

The relocation will also improve access and safety, with Argyle Street reconfigured to include a dedicated ambulance zone and public drop-off area.

Clear signage and traffic management will be in place to guide patients, visitors, motorists and pedestrians.

Access to the Hobart Private Hospital will not be affected by these works.

The Argyle Street entrance will operate until mid-2028, when works on Liverpool Street are complete.
