The Tasmanian Government is making it easier to report crimes with the launch of a new online portal.
Now live on the Tasmania Police website, the Online Crime Reporting portal enables Tasmanians to quickly and efficiently report a range of non-urgent crimes - such as graffiti, property damage and retail theft - from the convenience of their home or workplace.
Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Felix Ellis, said the new portal marked a significant leap forward in delivering modern police services to Tasmanians.
“The Online Crime Reporting portal will reduce the need for a phone call or an in-person visit to a police station,” Minister Ellis said.
“Accessible 24/7 via desktop and mobile devices, not only will it allow users to report at their own convenience, but it significantly simplifies the process for providing digital evidence, like CCTV, to police.
“Upon filing a report, people will receive an incident reference number that can be used for insurance purposes or follow-up enquiries.
“Since its soft launch in May, the feedback from the business community has been overwhelmingly positive, and we are confident individual Tasmanians will also appreciate this effective reporting method.”
The portal is expected to generate up to 1,000 reports each month in its first year.
Minister Ellis said the portal would also alleviate pressure on frontline officers.
“As part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we’re giving Police the resources they need to keep Tasmanians safe,” Minister Ellis said.
“The portal will streamline police operations, allowing our officers to spend less time on admin and more time responding to urgent incidents, conducting patrols and keeping Tasmanians safe.”
The new Online Crime Reporting portal complements the Safe2Say online portal, a 12-month pilot which allows anyone to report sexual harm against children and adults directly to Tasmania Police.
