New traffic lights to improve traffic flow at Olinda Grove roundabout

New traffic lights have been installed at the Olinda Grove roundabout in Mount Nelson.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Kerry Vincent, said the lights will become fully operational in October following completion of the final testing.

“The new traffic lights have been installed on the Mount Nelson approach to the Olinda Grove roundabout to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and enhance safety on the Hobart-bound off-ramp from the Southern Outlet,” Minister Vincent said.

“The lights have been programmed to activate only when queuing is detected on the Hobart-bound Southern Outlet off-ramp.

“When activated, they will briefly stop traffic approaching from Mount Nelson, allowing road users to move more efficiently through the roundabout and helping to prevent queues from building back onto the Southern Outlet.

“Testing is underway, with the lights turned on today.

“Reducing congestion and improving traffic flow is a key part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, which is what these upgrades will deliver.

“We are building an even better road network by investing in upgrades to improve safety, particularly during peak travel times.

“As part of the project, we have also installed traffic monitoring cameras near Proctors Road to help us respond quickly to incidents and changing traffic conditions.

“Road users are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the new traffic arrangements at Olinda Grove and to take extra care as the lights are introduced and traffic patterns adjust accordingly."

The Tasmanian Government invested $985,000 into the project and the City of Hobart provided $150,000.

Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said improving traffic flow at Olinda Grove has been a priority for our community.

“These signals are an important step forward,” Mayor Reynold said.

“We are pleased to partner with the Tasmanian Government to deliver a safer and more efficient transport network for Hobart.”
