Major construction begins on new Bass Highway heavy vehicle rest area

The next stage of construction is underway on the Bass Highway’s new heavy vehicle driver rest area at Detention River.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Kerry Vincent, announced major construction on the new rest area was underway, with preparation works now complete.

“We are delivering a new heavy vehicle rest area on the Bass Highway which includes three truck parking bays for Hellyer-bound traffic alongside the Detention River Store,” Minister Vincent said.

“By building new rest areas, we are contributing to safer and more reliable freight movements across Tasmania’s North-West.

“Each new rest area supports safer fatigue management for our truck drivers, providing them with more opportunities to rest, recharge and get to their destination safely.

“Construction on the new rest area is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

“A key part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is making Tasmania’s roads safer, which is what this project will deliver.”

A reduced speed limit and single-lane closures will be in place during working hours, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday.

Please remember to allow extra travel time, follow the direction of traffic controllers and signs and keep to the posted speed limits.
