Independent review of the parole board

The Tasmanian Government has engaged advisory firm KordaMentha to undertake an independent review into Tasmania's Parole Board following its use of unverified artificial intelligence.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Corrections and Rehabilitation, Guy Barnett, said our focus is ensuring Tasmanians maintain confidence in the integrity, fairness and professionalism of the parole system.

"Our community must have confidence that decisions made within the justice system are founded upon accurate information, sound professional judgement and robust governance," the Attorney-General said.

"The circumstances surrounding the Board's use of unverified AI-generated material when imposing parole conditions are very concerning.

"It is imperative that these matters are examined thoroughly and transparently."

The Review will assess the adequacy and effectiveness of the governance, systems and controls supporting parole decision-making and recommend any reforms required to strengthen the integrity, fairness, transparency and public accountability of Tasmania's parole system.

The Terms of Reference will be released once finalised.
