EOI opens for new aged care and assisted living facilities

Expressions of Interest (EOI) are now open for aged care and assisted living providers interested in developing and operating new facilities on government-owned greenfield sites across Tasmania.

The initiative delivers on the Tasmanian Government’s 2025 election commitment to increase aged care and assisted living options, while also helping take pressure off Tasmania’s hospital system.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said the EOI is an important step towards increasing the number of options available to Tasmanians.

“As Tasmania’s population gets older, we know demand for aged care services will continue to grow,” Minister Archer said.

“We want older Tasmanians to have more options to access the care and support they need, close to home and close to their families.

“More aged care beds and assisted living places will also help our hospitals.

“This is about making sure people receive the right care in the right setting, while making sure hospital care is available for those who need it.

“We are building an even better health system by investing in the services Tasmanians need.”

The Department of Health has identified greenfield sites across the State as part of the EOI process. An initial 13 sites were identified as suitable, however following further consultation with relevant agencies, this has been revised to eight sites.

The EOI will be undertaken in two stages. Providers will first be asked to submit a high-level proposal outlining their experience, capability and vision for the development.

Shortlisted proponents will then be invited to submit a more detailed business proposal.

Providers will be responsible for funding, developing and operating the facilities, with the Government seeking proposals that can deliver long-term benefits for local communities.

The EOI opens today, 26 September 2026, and will close on 6 November 2026.
