Nick Duigan, Minister for Sport

Young Tasmanians selected to represent the state at national championships will now receive increased support from the Tasmanian Government as part of cost of living measures.

Minister for Sport, Nick Duigan, said funding through the Junior Travel Assistance Program has been doubled.

“Previously successful athletes could receive $200 towards flights, accommodation or necessary uniforms,” Minister Duigan said.

“The Program will now allow eligible athletes to receive $400 to help them take up opportunities to compete and represent Tasmania.

"Representing Tasmania at a national championship is a proud achievement for any young athlete, with the program already supporting 1,700 young Tasmanians since its introduction in 2023.

“Our Government wants every young Tasmanian selected to represent our State to have the opportunity to do so, regardless of where they live or their family's financial circumstances.

“Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is all about taking more action on the issues affecting us most right now, such as cost of living.

“We know the costs associated with travel and competition can place pressure on families.

"That's why we're increasing support for this valuable imitative and we look forward to seeing more young Tasmanians representing the State at a national level.”

Applications are now open for the program, which helps eligible athletes aged 12-18, cover the costs of travel, accommodation and uniforms when representing Tasmania at national championships

Families and sporting organisations are encouraged to visit the Active Tasmania website to check eligibility requirements and submit an application: https://www.active.tas.gov.au/grants_and_funding
