The Tasmanian Government's Northern Economic Plan will energise the Northern economy with expressions of interest now open for a landmark Wellness Precinct in Northern Tasmania.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the response since the project was announced highlights the enormous opportunity to establish Northern Tasmania as a leading wellness destination.
"We've already received significant interest from investors and operators in Tasmania, Australia and across the world who recognise the unique opportunity Tasmania presents for wellness tourism," Premier Rockliff said.
"This strong level of interest reinforces what we already know.
"Northern Tasmania has the natural assets, lifestyle and visitor appeal to support a world-class wellness destination that can attract visitors year-round and drive economic growth.
"There is huge opportunity for a Northern wellness experience to work alongside the many premium tourism offerings in Tasmania, backing in this emerging sector across the State.
"The opening of the EOI marks an important next step in bringing this ambitious vision to life."
The Government is continuing to work with local councils to identify and assess suitable sites capable of hosting a nationally significant wellness development.
"We are undertaking a thorough process to explore land opportunities that can support a project of this scale and significance," Premier Rockliff said.
"Our focus is on ensuring we create the best possible conditions for proponents to put forward innovative and compelling proposals."
Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania chief executive officer, Amy Hills, said that with the two new Spirit of Tasmania vessels at our doorstep, now was the time to supercharge private investment in experiences and attractions right across the State.
"We want the visitors coming off those vessels to travel regionally and stay longer in our communities. The primary way to achieve that is through developing brand aligned experiences that our visitors want and need," Ms Hills said.
"The research tells us that wellbeing is a big motivator for travel and Tasmania is ideally placed to provide visitors with what they are craving.
"More development in the North adds to the work being done right across the State to innovate, add and develop new product and experiences, ensuring the entire State benefits."
Backed by Tourism Tasmania research, the project aims to capitalise on growing demand for wellness travel experiences that combine nature, relaxation, health and wellbeing.
Potential proposals may include:
- Thermal bathing and spa experiences;
- Hot and cold immersion pools;
- Luxury wellness accommodation;
- Health and wellbeing retreats;
- Nature immersion and walking experiences; and
- Wellness, longevity and preventative health programs.
Premier Rockliff said the precinct has the potential to become a major economic driver for the North.
"This is exactly the type of investment opportunity our Northern Economic Plan is designed to unlock," Premier Rockliff said.
"A successful Wellness Precinct would attract private investment, create jobs during construction and operation, support local businesses and further strengthen Northern Tasmania's reputation as a premium place to visit, live and invest.
"Tasmania is exceptionally well placed to capture more of that demand and to build off the reputation built by our already world-renown tourism operators.
"Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, we will continue to drive private investment into our State."
The EOI process is now open and will remain open for three months.
