Bridget Archer, Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing

The Tasmanian Government has delivered another initiative to reduce red tape in Tasmania, with registered mobile tattooing services now allowed under revised Guidelines for Tattooing.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we’re slashing red tape at every turn.

“The Guidelines have been updated to reflect contemporary practices and standards in the Tasmanian tattooing industry, while still maintaining the health and safety of Tasmanians,” Minister Archer said.

“The tattooing industry has evolved significantly over the past 30 years, and it’s important that our regulation keeps up with the needs of the industry while maintaining the standards and practices Tasmanians expect.

“We support the provision of mobile services, as long as they’re provided safely.”

Under the new Guidelines, mobile structures can be used for tattooing provided the mobile premises is registered with the local council and complies with the procedural and environmental standards required of bricks-and-mortar premises.

Additional changes to the Guidelines include updated references to codes, practices and standards, and guidance on infection prevention and control practices.

“These Guidelines for Tattooing are in place to ensure tattooists comply with measures that protect clients, practitioners and the wider community from infections associated with tattooing,” Minister Archer said.

“Unsafe or unhygienic practices can have serious consequences, and the regulatory framework is designed to ensure appropriate infection control standards are consistently met.

“Tattooists complying with the updated Guidelines will be able to provide a professional service that is as safe as a bricks-and-mortar tattoo business.

“I want to thank the community for their interest and engagement on the Guidelines.”
