A ceremonial sod turn has taken place, marking a significant milestone for Project Marinus.
Marinus Link is an undersea electricity and data interconnector that will operate between North West Tasmania and the Latrobe Valley in Victoria.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the project provides a once-in-a-generation opportunity.
"Project Marinus will strengthen Tasmania's economy and create jobs," Premier Rockliff said.
"Importantly, power prices will be lower with Marinus than without.
“This investment will build on the visionary approach our forebears had when building the Hydro.
“We’re backing it with the full support of our Commonwealth and Victorian Government funding partners.
“Importantly, this is a bi-partisan effort and something every side of politics wants to see succeed.
“Today marks an important milestone as we look to put downward pressure on power prices and deliver a stronger economy.”
Minister for Energy and Renewables, Nick Duigan, said today’s milestone event was the result of years of work.
“Project Marinus is going to deliver energy security and help Hydro Tasmania better leverage its world-class hydro resources,” Minister Duigan said.
“The sod turning for the Marinus Link component is a huge day for Tasmania – but it is underpinned by years of work that is already benefitting the community.
“As we prepare the North West Transmission Development, almost $55 million has already been invested in 87 vendors, including over 50 Tasmanian businesses.
“We have already seen 13 local North and North West Tasmanian businesses engaged so they can help support the delivery of Marinus Link locally.
“We are building an even stronger renewable energy system with this project, which is already delivering economic opportunities for Tasmanian businesses.
“Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is driving the delivery of Marinus, an investment that will benefit future generations of Tasmanians.”
