Tasmanian community organisations will be able to turn their ideas for reducing waste into action through a new $500,000 grants program.
Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Guy Barnett, said the Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery Board Community Grants Program would provide grants of between $10,000 and $50,000 for eligible projects across Tasmania.
"Community organisations, charities and social enterprises are already doing valuable work to reduce waste and encourage reuse and repair across Tasmania," Minsiter Barnett said.
"We are building an even better circular economy with these grants providing an opportunity to trial innovative ideas and give successful local initiatives the capacity to reach more people.
"Whether it's expanding a repair initiative, creating a community reuse hub, reducing waste at events or developing new skills and services, these grants can help good local ideas become a reality.
"Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future is backing our communities to reduce waste and support our State's transition towards a circular economy."
The program will support projects - that avoid, reduce, reuse, repair and recycle - with applications assessed competitively on their community benefit, impact, feasibility and value for money.
The Community Grants Program is being administered by Natural Resource Management (NRM) North on behalf of the Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery Board.
NRM North Chief Executive Officer Louise Foster said the program would help to kickstart sustainability projects across the state.
"Community organisations understand local needs and often have practical ideas ready to go," Ms Foster said.
"These grants can provide the investment needed to create a more sustainable Tasmania, by turning those local ideas into action and contributing to practical waste solutions."
