Swimmers and community members are celebrating the reopening of Glenorchy’s War Memorial Pool.

The pool has undergone significant upgrades since closing in 2023, with the Tasmanian Government investing $5 million into the project and a further $1.5 million from the Glenorchy City Council.

The pool is an important part of the Glenorchy community, opening in 1963 as a memorial to those who served in World War II.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff said it was fantastic to see the upgrade delivered and the doors now open to the community.

“For more than 60 years, the Glenorchy War Memorial Pool has provided generations of Tasmanians with opportunities to learn to swim, stay active, improve health and wellbeing and connect with their community,” Premier Rockliff said.

“We are building an even better Tasmania by investing in important community infrastructure like the Glenorchy pool.”

Minister for Sport, Nick Duigan, said the Government’s investment means the community would once again have access to this important facility.

“These significant upgrades better meet this growing community’s needs,” Minister Duigan said.

“This investment has extended the life of the facility and provides certainty for the many families, schools, sporting groups and community members who rely on it each summer.

“Importantly, the pool now provides accessible space for people of all ages and abilities to participate in sport and recreation, while developing lifelong water safety skills.

“Our government will continue delivering for Tasmanians under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future to ensure they have access to quality sporting facilities here at home.

“I would like to acknowledge Glenorchy City Council, contractors, and the many community members whose advocacy and support helped make this project possible.”

Mayor of Glenorchy Sue Hickey said the reopening was a significant and much-anticipated milestone for the Glenorchy community.

“For generations, the Glenorchy War Memorial Pool has been more than just a place to swim. It is a place where people have learned new skills, spent time with family and friends, and created lasting memories,” Mayor Hickey said.

“The community has been at the heart of this project from beginning to end, and we are delighted to return this much-loved facility to the people of Glenorchy.

"Council sincerely thanks the Tasmanian Government for its significant investment and everyone who worked so hard to bring this project to life.”
