Work to improve Launceston’s Elphin Sports Centre is a step closer with newly released concept designs showing how the upgrades will improve accessibility, amenity and functionality.

Minister for Sport, Nick Duigan, said the $4.7 million upgrades are set to begin later this year, delivering improvements which will future proof the centre for years to come.

“Elphin Sports Centre has served as an important community centre in the state’s north for more than 60 years, and these upgrades will help take the facility to the next level,” Minister Duigan said.

“These improvements will deliver important upgrades to the facility, including the foyer entry and car park upgrades.

“The new concept designs lay out an exciting future for community sport at Elphin.

“Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we are investing in community sporting infrastructure to ensure Tasmanians can stay active and access sporting opportunities.”

Minister for Disability Services, Jo Palmer, said these works were about a future where everyone feels seen, heard and valued.

"Improving access to Tasmania’s sporting facilities is an important way to ensure our State is more inclusive," Minister Palmer said.

“Projects like this help remove barriers so more locals and visitors with disability can enjoy sport and physical activity.

“These improvements are about making sure our facilities are welcoming and accessible for everyone who wants to experience them.

“This is what accessibility is all about - making sure everyone has the opportunity to connect with the places that make our State special.”

The upgrade includes improved accessibility, lift replacement, installation of two new accessible toilets and showers, along with a new accessible ramp; and electrical, fire and mechanical services upgrades.

Also included will be new men’s and women’s change rooms, providing more modern facilities.

The 2026-27 Tasmanian Budget provided an additional $2.1 million for the Elphin Sports Centre upgrades, bringing the Tasmanian Government’s total investment in the project to $4.7 million.

Works are expected to be completed by mid 2027.
