Gavin Pearce, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs

Consultation is now open on the review of the Anzac Day Observance Act 1929.

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Gavin Pearce, said the Act is almost 100 years old, and we want to ensure it is modern and fit for purpose while continuing to acknowledge and respect the significance of the day.

“We need to make it easier for businesses and organisations to understand their requirements and clearly outline when they need to seek approval to operate, trade, or hold events on Anzac Day,” Minister Pearce said.

“But, the significance of ANZAC Day, and the sacrifice made by those diggers, must remain front and centre.

“We must get the balance right, and that’s what this review is all about.

“We will slash red tape for business and deliver administrative efficiencies.

“We will be looking at how other jurisdictions operate on Anzac Day, alongside engaging with stakeholders across the small business and veterans’ sectors.

“This includes looking at ways to back in veterans’ organisations such as RSL Tasmania by exploring the potential to take a percentage of revenue from ticket sales/gate takings at major sporting events held on Anzac Day and invest them into a Veterans’ Fund.

“We want to hear from our veterans, ex-service organisations, businesses, sporting and community organisations, local government and the wider public about how the Act is working and how it could be strengthened.”

Submissions are now open and close at 2:00pm on Monday 7 December 2026.
