Kerry Vincent, Minister for Housing and Planning

The tender to undertake an independent review of the Tasmanian Housing Register is now open for applicants.

The Housing Register is the pathway Tasmanians use to apply for social housing. The review will examine whether it appropriately identifies and represents contemporary and projected housing need and demand.

Minister for Housing and Planning Kerry Vincent said this is about delivering Tasmanians fair, effective and transparent access to social housing.

“We are focused on ensuring the housing register remains fit for purpose as housing needs and the housing landscape continue to evolve,” Minister Vincent said.

“The review is an important opportunity review our approach and make sure it keeps pace with changing housing needs, demographic trends and the housing market and appropriately identify those who need social housing assistance.

"Importantly, the housing register needs to operate effectively for those who need social housing.

“This is about taking a careful and evidence-based look at how the Housing Register works and identifying opportunities to make sure it works effectively into the future.

“Delivering more homes is a key part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future so we want to understand what is working well, where there are opportunities for improvement and what changes may be needed to ensure the Register remains responsive to the needs of Tasmanians.”

The review will examine four key areas: how housing need and demand are identified; how applications are assessed and prioritised; how available social housing is allocated; and the governance, performance, data and systems supporting the Register.

The review will include significant consultation and engagement with the housing and homelessness sector, community housing providers, specialist homelessness services and advocacy organisations, as well as Housing Register applicants and social housing tenants where their experiences can inform the review.

The review is expected to commence in December 2026 and take approximately six months.
