The Tasmanian Government is continuing to prioritise literacy and support foundational reading and writing skills, with new Home Practice Phonics Kits set to be distributed to families in coming weeks.
A further 13,860 kits are being delivered across 118 government primary schools, ensuring learners right around the state have access to these important new tools.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff said our Government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is driving our strong focus on lifting literacy results.
“In Term 1 of this year, we delivered more than 13,000 Phonics Tile Kits for use in Prep - Year 2 classrooms,” the Premier said.
“These new Home Practice Kits build on that investment, extending literacy learning beyond the classroom and into students' homes where children can continue building foundational reading skills with familiar resources and their families.
“Through initiatives like this, we are supporting transformational change in our schools, ensuring students are engaged in consistent, structured, evidence-based literacy.”
Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said our strong focus on literacy is already showing encouraging results across our primary schools.
“I know how hard schools are working, and I have seen just how engaged students are with their classroom-based Phonics Kits,” Minister Palmer said.
"Together, the Classroom and Home Practice Phonics Kits create a connected learning experience for students both inside and outside of the classroom.
“We know that explicit and structured phonics instruction is the most effective way to teach students to read, and these kits help extend that learning beyond the classroom, giving families practical tools to support their child’s literacy development.”
The new Home Practice Phonics Kits have been developed specifically for Tasmanian Government schools, informed by feedback from teachers and developed in collaboration with the Dyslexia SPELD Foundation.
