Safety upgrades to start on Kings Meadows interchange

Safety upgrades at the Kings Meadows interchange are set to start this week, with works to be delivered in two stages.

The upgrades involve extending the south-bound off ramp from the Midland Highway to provide more space for queued cars and realigning the left-turn lane from Kings Meadows Link onto the Midland Highway on-ramp.

The upgrades will also see new traffic lights installed on Dolerite Drive and Kings Meadows Link, which will only operate when queues form on the off-ramp. The lights will create gaps to allow vehicles to exit safely and keep traffic flowing smoothly during peak travel times, while maintaining free flowing conditions outside busy periods.

The $3.3 million safety upgrades are jointly funded by the Australian Government ($2.6 million) and the Tasmanian Government ($660,000) under the Road Safety Program.

Stage 1

Stage 1 will include roundabout upgrades, roadside clearing, and relocation of services.

Preparation works will take place overnight on Thursday 14 May 2026, from 6:00pm to 6:00am, and will include a reduced speed limit and single lane closures on Perth-bound lanes of the Midland Highway.

Construction will then start from Friday 15 May 2026, Monday to Friday, with work taking place during the day from 7:00am to 6:00pm. Some night works will also take place as required.

During construction there will be a reduced speed limit and changed traffic arrangements on Perth-bound lanes of the Midland Highway, the off-ramp and roundabout. Access through the interchange will remain unaffected.

Road users should allow up to 15 minutes extra travel time through the work site, follow the directions of traffic controllers and signs, and keep to the posted speed limit.

This stage is expected to be completed in August 2026, weather permitting.

Stage 2

The remaining upgrades, including traffic light installation and extending the off-ramp will be completed in Stage 2, which is expected to start in October 2026 and finish in December 2026, weather permitting.
