The 2026-27 Budget will deliver a $20,000 First Home Owner Grant, supporting Tasmanians who build their own home and the construction industry.

The grant was due to return to the legislated $10,000 in the next financial year.

This investment will deliver targeted cost of living relief and help more Tasmanians achieve the goal of home ownership.

Treasurer Eric Abetz said the 2026-27 Budget gets the balance right.

“This Budget will set Tasmania up for the future by tackling debt, keeping the economy strong, and delivering the services and infrastructure we need," the Treasurer said.

“Owning your first home is a major milestone, and the grant will make a real difference for Tasmanians trying to enter the market.

“Eligible first home buyers building or purchasing a new home will be able to access the $20,000 grant, providing stronger support at a time when affordability remains a key challenge.

"This measure puts money back into the pockets of first home buyers while also stimulating new housing supply and supporting jobs across the building industry.

“The First Home Owner Grant applies to new homes, helping to drive construction activity and support local trades while increasing housing supply.

“We know that we must be coming at housing from all angles, and this targeted measure is just one piece of our larger efforts to deliver more roofs over more heads.”

The Tasmanian Government intends to table a Bill in the House of Assembly shortly to deliver on this commitment.
