Guy Barnett, Attorney-General
The Tasmanian Government’s historical forced adoptions redress scheme will open for applications on 15 June 2026.
The 2026-27 Budget includes a $4 million investment to implement the scheme, which will offer nation-leading support for mothers affected by historical forced adoptions, including a redress support payment of $75,000, consisting of both a redress payment and payment for psychological and counselling support.
Attorney-General, Guy Barnett, said this Budget delivers a strong economy and a caring community.
“This is an important step in ensuring we right the wrongs of the past,” the Attorney said.
“Our Government has been unwavering in our commitment to seeing affected mothers have access to financial assistance and support.
“Historical forced adoptions caused significant pain and suffering for so many women, and I want to recognise all those mothers who have been affected by these practices.
“I want to thank those who participated in consultation in the development of the full scheme – it is your voices, and your lived experience, that has seen this become the nation’s leading forced adoptions redress scheme.”
Detailed consultation on the design of the scheme was conducted and feedback incorporated in the final design, including that the $10,000 provision for psychological and counselling support will be paid directly to the eligible recipient.
The interim scheme has been in operation since February 2026. Mothers who have already successfully applied for the interim scheme will not need to undertake a further application.
The Scheme is open to mothers who were/are a Tasmanian resident; gave birth at a state-operated hospital, non-government facility or at home in Tasmania or interstate; and was subjected to forced adoption practices before the end of the year 1988.
