Kerry Vincent, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport

Tasmanians are increasingly choosing public transport, with new figures showing statewide patronage has increased by more than 20 per cent in the past week.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Kerry Vincent said it highlight’s the growing role public transport is playing in helping households manage cost of living pressures.

“The latest data from Metro Tasmania demonstrates strong confidence in Tasmania’s bus network, with Metro’s growth recorded across all service regions, including Hobart patronage up 21 per cent, Launceston up 23 per cent, and Burnie up 10 per cent compared with the previous week,” Minister Vincent said.

Other bus providers have also reported an uplift in patronage.

Public transport plays a critical role in supporting Tasmanians to access work, education and essential services, while helping reduce everyday transport costs.

“At a time when our community is under pressure from rising fuel costs, more Tasmanians are turning to public transport as a reliable and affordable option,” Minister Vincent said.

“Using public transport, particularly with the Government’s half price fare initiative, delivers a real difference to weekly budgets.

“The Tasmanian Liberal Government remains focused on strengthening public transport services to meet growing demand and ensure communities across Tasmania can rely on affordable, accessible transport options.”

Metro Tasmania CEO Jessica Paton said the strong increase in patronage shows public transport is a practical and viable choice for Tasmanians.

“More people are choosing public transport because it is affordable, reliable and fits into everyday life, particularly as cost of living pressures continue,” Ms Paton said.
