Jo Palmer, Minister for Education
The Big Summer Read has wrapped up for another year at Libraries Tasmania, with hundreds of young Tasmanians building great reading habits over the 2025–2026 summer break.
Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said the reading challenge saw participants log the number of books or days spent reading from 1 December 2025 to 31 January 2026.
“It’s wonderful to see so many young people choosing to read for enjoyment and keeping their skills strong over summer,” Minister Palmer said.
“We had 791 young people read an impressive 12,110 books, which is almost double last year’s total.
“Our libraries are welcoming community spaces where young people can explore stories, spark their imagination and build a lifelong love of reading.
“The Tasmanian Government is getting on with the job and delivering for Tasmanians by lifting literacy across the State.”
Libraries Tasmania delivered 109 free school holiday activities to more than 1,500 attendees across Tasmania in January as part of the Big Summer Read program.
The graphic novel and comic writing workshops with Tasmanian Big Summer Read Ambassador Alyssa Bermudez were a huge success, along with self guided activities such as scavenger hunts, puzzles and writing book reviews.
With summer over, Libraries Tasmania is now focused on celebrating Tasmania Reads from 22 to 28 March.
