Upgrades to the Tamar Island Wetlands boardwalk and bridges are progressing, with a contract for stage two of the $2.4m project now awarded.

Minister for Parks, Nick Duigan, said works will begin on July 6 and will be delivered by local firm AJR Construct Pty Ltd.

“These upgrades are a key part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, and will improve accessibility and the visitor experience at one of Northern Tasmania’s most valued natural destinations, while protecting its important natural and cultural values,” Minister Duigan said.

“Two bridges and the connecting boardwalk that provide access to Tamar Island will be replaced, helping to ensure this special place can be enjoyed for generations to come.

“The Tamar Island boardwalk is part of the very popular Tasmania’s 60 Great Short Walks, offering an access friendly walk - suitable for strollers and wheelchairs.

“Importantly, the Tamar Island Wetlands Centre will remain open during construction, with volunteers continuing to provide interpretation and share their knowledge of the wetlands – an essential part of the visitor experience.

“Our Government is delivering improved facilities and protecting the character of our much-loved recreation areas.

“Investing in parks and wetlands supports regional tourism and protects our special places for the future.”

Access to some walkways and bridges will be restricted during works. However, visitors can still reach the bird hide and experience the wetlands’ rich birdlife, with around 60 species recorded in the area.

Stage two follows the removal of the old jetty infrastructure earlier this year.
